Hello Washington Square,
The WSNA always tries to share neighborly news that affects all of us. So, when we found out that fellow Washington Square neighbor Jess Rivas had decided to run as our new City Council Person, we of course wanted to share the news. Below are a few words by Jess about why she is running and how to support her nomination if you are interested.
As you may know, Mayor Victor Gordo was recently sworn in, temporarily leaving us without a representative on the City Council. The vacancy will be filled via appointment by the Council in early February. I am applying, so I thought I’d introduce myself to those of you who I haven’t met yet. Hopefully, we can all catch up in person at a WSNA event (Dog Parade Part II?) later this year, *fingers crossed.*
I live with my husband Alex and our 1-year-old daughter Natalia on Hudson Avenue. We moved into the neighborhood 5 years ago and have enjoyed getting to know our neighbors through the WSNA since then.
I am applying for the vacancy because I want to be a voice for everyone in our district, but especially the most vulnerable during these trying times, including our unhoused neighbors. My record of public service (deputy attorney general, deputy county counsel, Army reservist, Pasadena commissioner – Northwest Commission and Commission on the Status of Women) makes me an excellent candidate.
My experience in government at the local, state and federal levels will make me an effective advocate for our district from day one. Additionally, as a working mother with a small child, I will add an important perspective to the Council, which has had very few women members through the years.
Thank you and Happy New Year!
Jess Rivas
